Wives Behind the Badge, Inc. is pleased to announce the winner of our 2011 Law Enforcement Spouses’ Scholarship is Alexis Davis of Mattawan, Michigan. Alexis is a student at Lewis University and is working towards her Master of Science in Public Safety Administration. Alexis is the wife of Brandon Davis, a Trooper with the Michigan State Police, a proud mother of two, and a current employee of the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department. She is active in her community and was also named Dispatcher of the Year for 2008 in Eaton County.
To apply for this scholarship, every applicant must submit an essay that discusses what being a law enforcement spouse has meant to them. We received some amazing entries this year, but Alexis’ words stuck with us in a big way. Despite all the things law enforcement families give up and the hurdles they must overcome, there is a reason we stick with this lifestyle. Alexis wrote, “…being a law enforcement spouse also means that you are married to the kind of person who would lay their life on the line for another and being part of something bigger than yourself. You are the backbone that supports those who protect and serve. You are the reason they go out and do what they do and you are the reason they fight to come home.” Alexis’ work ethic and ability to balance her family, education, and work all prove just how much of source of strength she is. She truly understands what being a law enforcement spouse means – “it means having the distinct honor of calling a hero your husband.”
The Board of Directors, Staff, and Members of Wives Behind the Badge, Inc. send their sincerest congratulations to Alexis on this award! The other finalist for this year’s scholarship – Regina Colon – was an amazing candidate, which made the final decision difficult. We wish our finalists and all of our applicants this year the best of luck in their higher education and beyond.
We’d also like to express our gratitude to the volunteers on our Scholarship Committee. Thank you to Jack Holder, Martha Holder, and CHP Officer Corde Spencer! We could not do our work without your help!
